Community Liaison and Education Officers

The Race Relations, Equity, and Inclusion (RREI) unit is the Education and Community Outreach arm of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. Staff of this unit support the work of the Commission through education and training, relationship building and partnership with diverse communities in Nova Scotia

The role of RREI is enshrined in our legislation. In accordance with sections 25 and 26A of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act the RREI team aims to promote interracial and cultural understanding and respect, and prevention of discrimination to achieve a more equitable society for all Nova Scotians.

Staff also provide expert advice and support to government, community organizations and businesses across Nova Scotia to address and prevent systemic discrimination and work towards creating a more inclusive society.

The mandate of the Commission is supported through the work of the Mi’kmaq/Indigenous Liaison and Education Officer and the African Nova Scotian Liaison and Education Officer.

Mi’kmaq/Indigenous Liaison and Education Officer

This position coordinates and promotes Human Rights through education and awareness to the diverse range of Mi’kmaq and Indigenous communities and to all Nova Scotians at large. By promoting Indigenous approaches and perspectives, the Mi’kmaq/Indigenous Liaison and Education Officer supports the Commission’s commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices in its relationship with the community and in resolving human rights complaints.

African Nova Scotian Liaison and Education Officer

The position coordinates and promotes Human Rights through education and awareness to the diverse range of African Nova Scotian communities, communities of African descent and to all Nova Scotians at large. By promoting Africentric approaches and perspectives, the African Nova Scotian Liaison and Education Officer supports the Commission’s commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices in its relationship with the community and in resolving human rights complaints.
