Human Rights on Screen: Seahorse
The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission is once again partnering with the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) to present a special Human Rights on Screen screening of Seahorse, the debut feature from Canadian writer, director and actor Aisha Evelyna.
Seahorse follows Nola, a Toronto sous chef struggling to find stability when her estranged father, Cyrus, re-enters her life and she discovers he is experiencing homelessness. Bringing him into her home forces Nola to confront long-buried wounds as father and daughter navigate grief, forgiveness and the possibility of repairing their relationship. The film explores themes including housing insecurity, mental health and generational trauma.
Premiering at South By Southwest (SXSW) earlier this year, Seahorse will make its Canadian premiere at the 2026 Atlantic International Film Festival, taking place September 16 to 23 in Halifax.
Through Human Rights on Screen, the Commission and AIFF use film and storytelling as a starting point for conversations about human rights and the experiences that shape our communities.
