Celebrating Jewish Heritage

May 20, 2025

May is Canadian Jewish Heritage Month - a time to recognize and celebrate the rich contributions of Jewish Canadians to the cultural, economic, political, and social fabric of our country. In Nova Scotia, this month provides an opportunity to honour the legacy, resilience, and ongoing presence of Jewish communities that have helped shape our province's history and values.

Jewish Canadians first established communities in places like Halifax, Sydney, Glace Bay, and New Glasgow. From building lives, fostering communities of faith, growing businesses, creating and advancing institutions to advocating for justice and equality, Jewish Nova Scotians have played a vital role in advancing social progress. At the same time, many have faced and resisted antisemitism, exclusion, and discrimination - experiences that underscore the importance of continuing to uphold and protect human rights for all.

Canadian Jewish Heritage Month reminds us that protecting human rights is not only about addressing present-day issues, but also about understanding the historical injustices communities have endured. In Nova Scotia, the Human Rights Act protects individuals from discrimination based on religion, ethnic and national origin, and other grounds, helping to ensure that Jewish Nova Scotians can live with dignity, safety, and freedom of expression.

This month is also a call to remain vigilant in the face of rising antisemitism, both globally and here at home. Commemoration must be matched by education, solidarity, and action. Through reflection, awareness, and a commitment to equity, we can continue to build a province where Jewish communities - and all communities - can thrive without fear or hate.

Let us all mark Canadian Jewish Heritage Month with gratitude, recognition, and a renewed commitment to defending human rights for everyone, throughout Nova Scotia.Top of Form
