Protecting the Rights of First Nations Residents

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission acknowledges and supports the Mi’kmaq Treaty right to fish and earn a moderate livelihood. The Commission is mandated to address acts of racism and discrimination and is closely monitoring the situation in southwestern Nova Scotia. 

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission asks all residents to remember that it is illegal under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act to discriminate against people of aboriginal origin. This includes the denial of services.

While circumstances continue to evolve, and parties undertake to clarify and resolve tensions it is incumbent upon all Nova Scotians to respect the rights of their neighbours and fellow citizens to ensure fair, equal, and unrestricted access to all products and services.

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of discrimination based on any of the characteristics protected under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act is encouraged to contact the Commission directly.
