United Against Genocide Travelling Exhibit

A travelling exhibit on loan from the Montreal Holocaust Museum will be displayed at Victoria Park, Sydney from Nov 2-14.

Through testimony and rare archives, the travelling exhibition, United Against Genocide: Understand, Question, Prevent invites audiences to identify the similarities and differences between four genocides: the Armenian Genocide, the Cambodian Genocide, the Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda and the Holocaust (Shoah). We can prevent future recurrences of genocide by being informed and remaining vigilant.

Genocide is not a sudden phenomenon, but the result of a deliberate process that can be stopped. Understanding its warning signs and stages, while grasping its mechanisms and causes allows us to better comprehend this process and prevent its recurrence. Through rare historical documents, archival photos and testimony, the exhibition identifies the stages leading to genocide, the role of the media, the importance of survivors for remembrance, the fight for justice, the ways through which resistance can manifest itself and explores four current situations where genocide is likely to occur.

The Montreal Holocaust Museum loaned the exhibit to the local Holocaust Education Week Committee at no cost. A partnership between the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (CBVRCE) and Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission covered expenses associated with transporting, hosting and displaying it.

Area students will visit the exhibit during its time in Sydney. Volunteer guides will help as interpreters and support students, teachers and members of the public as they learn together.
