Jewish Heritage Month
Throughout May each year Jewish Heritage Month offers an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the enduring contributions of Jewish communities to life across Canada and Nova Scotia.
Jewish Nova Scotians have helped shape the social, cultural, and economic fabric of this province for more than two centuries. From early settlement and small business development to leadership in law, medicine, education, public service, and the arts, these contributions are woven into the story of our communities. Institutions such as the Beth Israel Synagogue and Shaar Shalom Congregation stand as living reminders of a vibrant and enduring presence.
Jewish Heritage Month is also a time to acknowledge the challenges that Jewish communities have faced, including discrimination and antisemitism. These realities underscore the continuing importance of vigilance in the protection of human rights.
In Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act affirms the right of every person to live free from discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, and other protected characteristics. These protections are not abstract. They are grounded in the lived experiences of communities, including Jewish Nova Scotians, whose advocacy and resilience have helped to shape a more inclusive province.
Human rights are both a legal framework and a shared responsibility. Jewish Heritage Month invites all of us to consider how we carry that responsibility forward. It calls on us to confront prejudice where it exists, to build understanding across differences, and to ensure that our institutions and communities reflect the dignity and worth of every person.
The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission calls upon all Nova Scotians to commemorate Jewish Heritage Month as a time of both celebration and reflection, and reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing equity, protecting rights, and fostering a province where everyone can participate fully and safely in community life.
