Asian Heritage Month
Asian Heritage Month occurs annually in May and invites us to recognize and reflect on the histories, cultures, and contributions of Asian communities across Canada and here in Nova Scotia.
Asian Canadians have helped shape this country in lasting ways. In Nova Scotia, communities with roots in China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and across Southeast and West Asia have contributed to the growth of our economy, the strength of our public institutions, and the richness of our cultural life. Their leadership can be seen in small businesses, healthcare, education, science, the arts, and public service. These contributions are not only recent. They are part of a longer history of building communities, often in the face of exclusion and hardship.
Asian Heritage Month is also a time to acknowledge that this history includes periods of discrimination, exclusionary laws, and systemic barriers. These experiences are part of the broader Canadian story and remain relevant today, as many continue to face racism and inequity in their daily lives.
In Nova Scotia, the Human Rights Act affirms the right of every person to live free from discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, and other protected characteristics. These protections are strengthened by the voices and experiences of Asian communities, whose advocacy has helped to push institutions toward greater fairness and accountability.
Human rights are not static. They are shaped by the people who claim them and the communities that insist on their protection. Asian Heritage Month is a moment to recognize that progress, while also acknowledging the work that remains.
The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission marks this month by celebrating the contributions of Asian Nova Scotians and reaffirming its commitment to advancing equity, confronting racism, and ensuring that everyone can participate fully and safely in community life.
The preceding is a statement from Joseph Fraser, Director & CEO of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.
