Human Rights on Screen: The Jackie Shane Story
The Human Rights Commission is excited to partner with the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) to screen Any Other Way; The Jackie Shane Story on Monday, September 16.
This in-person event takes place during the 2024 AIFF official program. It marks a formal “launch” of the successful Human Rights on Screen series which showcases diverse stories and facilitates public dialogue about human rights, equity and inclusion.
About the film
A riveting journey into the life and legacy of Jackie Shane, a pioneering soul singer who defied conventions and redefined music in the 1960s. As one of the first Black trans performers to command stages and hearts, Shane’s rise to prominence was as thrilling as her disappearance was mysterious. This little-known icon is given her ultimate due in Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee’s remarkable documentary portrait, executive produced by Elliot Page. Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story goes deep into Shane’s captivating story, weaving together never-before-heard interviews and lively animations to bring her unique voice and spirit to life.
Joseph Fraser, Commission Director and CEO will open the screening and a Q&A with the film’s producer Amanda Burt will follow. The film’s presentation will include closed captions and described video will be provided using headsets on-site. Tickets are available online now.
