Commission Condemns Discrimination Targeting Political Candidates
Amidst reports of municipal political candidates facing discrimination as they campaign for office, the Human Rights Commission is asking all Nova Scotians to remain vigilant against discrimination and hatred.
Political candidates enter public life as part of their commitment to serving their communities and constituents. Unfortunately, some become targets of discrimination and hate.
It is unlawful under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act to discriminate against anyone based on their race, colour, political affiliation, and several other protected characteristics.
As Nova Scotians engage in municipal elections it is important that we show civility and respect, for our political candidates. It is especially important that candidates from historically underrepresented and equity deserving groups including those from communities of African descent are not threatened or discouraged in any way from seeking office.
Saturday, October 19 is municipal election day in Nova Scotia. To learn how and where to vote visit your municipality’s website.
