Restorative Approaches

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission wants to help all parties resolve a human rights complaint. To do this as quickly and effectively as possible, we apply restorative approaches in our process.

The way human rights complaints are resolved should deal with possible harm to relationships (for example, employer/employee, landlord/tenant, customer/retailer).  It is important that resolution helps restore those relationships.  The Commission is strongly committed to restorative approaches.

Restorative approaches recognize that discrimination, and the belief you were discriminated against, are harmful to more than just the people directly involved.

Family members, co-workers, customers or other tenants can all be affected by a human rights complaint.

All these people can benefit from taking part in, or at least knowing about, any solution.
